Job description

Overview

The University Libraries at Old Dominion University invite applicants for a Research Data Management (RDM) Librarian.

The RDM Librarian will develop and deliver RDM services to faculty and graduate student researchers, communicate developments in RDM requirements of federal agencies and publishers, provide training and consultations with faculty and students on finding, evaluating, and sharing datasets using data analytics tools and systems, build internal and external partnerships, and participate in other scholarly communication projects as needed.

The RDM Librarian will have liaison librarian responsibilities (research consultations, collection development, instruction) for one or more departments, to be assigned based on Libraries needs and the skills and interests of the incumbent.


Minimum Qualifications



  1. American Library Association accredited Master’s degree in Library & Information Science.

  2. Basic familiarity with emerging trends in research data management

  3. Basic knowledge of data collection, analysis, organization, and management.

  4. Basic familiarity with scholarly communication issues (including open access, copyright, author rights).

  5. Considerable ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  6. Considerable organizational, time management, and project management skills.

  7. Considerable ability to work well with diverse groups of people.

  8. Basic ability to enter and manipulate data and produce reports in database software, and to create documents in word processing software, specifically the Microsoft Office Suite.

  9. Considerable ability to effectively utilize the Internet, content management systems, library databases, and citation management systems.

  10. Some research experience.

  11. Some experience working in an academic library.

  12. Considerable experience teaching, training, or presenting.

  13. Some experience working both independently and collaboratively in a demanding and rapidly changing service-oriented environment.

  14. Willingness and ability to learn data curation techniques and open science methodologies.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Basic knowledge of tools to support data visualization, analysis, and cleanup, such as R, OpenRefine, Python, SPSS, NVivo, and ArcGIS.

  • Basic experience in data management and curation.

  • Basic knowledge of publicly available and proprietary data sources.

  • Basic knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

  • Basic knowledge of public data requirements for federal and other research funding agencies.
