What Success Looks Like In This Job

The Restitution/Victim Services Technician performs a variety of clerical duties and provides support services for victims impacted by criminal cases referred to the 17th Judicial District Diversion Program.

This position works under the direction of the Director of Diversion.

Work assignments involve communicating with victims of crime and gathering financial documents and other information;analyzing factual detail; preparing documentation for collection of restitution; supporting victims of crime and aiding them in their efforts toward recovery.Restitution/Victim Services Technicians support the mission of the District Attorney’s Office by serving victims of crime, protecting the community, and making the criminal justice system better.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Review case file to confirm proper case entry and classification of victim to ensure correct dissemination of Restitution Statements and Victim Impact Statements.

  • Analyze and act upon the return of Restitution Statements and Victim Impact Statements.

  • Collaborates, explains and follows-up with victims of crime, collateral agencies, co-workers, and other stakeholders in the collection of financial documents necessary for a request of restitution.

    Verification of submitted documents to establish legitimacy and nexus to the criminal case.

  • Assembles and assesses complex data to compile financial figures based on verification of crime-related losses.

  • Prepares documentation for collection of restitution.

  • Establishes and maintains a working knowledge of the laws impacting restitution in criminal cases.

  • Documents case work/status and statistics in the electronic database.

  • Screens and responds to visitors or telephone calls regarding restitution; provide routine factual/procedural information or directs to appropriate unit or individual.

  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment to teamwork and working in a collaborative, supportive environment.

  • Provides direct services and assistance to victims impacted by crime by providing guidance to victims seeking financial reimbursement, advising them on their involvement in restorative justice programs, and otherwise assisting victims with the diversion process.

  • Attends and participates in training opportunities related to the diversion program, restitution, and victim advocacy.

  • To be successful, our ideal candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Standard office procedures and forms applicable to the specific unit and/or assignment.

  • Possess a strong working knowledge of standard legal/court procedures and legal terminology, knowledge of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.?

  • The ability to process work using database programs and or specific software programs.

  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize large volumes of cases and/or data to meet established deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with attorneys, support staff, victims, and collateral agencies.

  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow workers, attorneys, police, therapists, medical providers, and related agencies' personnel and the other stakeholders, including victims, witnesses, and clients.

  • Working knowledge of Colorado criminal justice system procedures

  • Exercise attention to detail in performing assigned work tasks for accuracy and completeness.

  • Operate standard office equipment, e.g., personal computer, 10-key calculator, copier, scanner, and fax.

  • Perform standard and moderately complex mathematical calculations and gain working knowledge of simple bookkeeping procedures.

  • Proficient in problem solving with the ability to map and interpret complex cases while working independently.

  • Be able to exercise empathyand maintain a calm demeanor when dealing with emotionally distraught persons.

  • Qualifications for Success

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • A minimum of one (1) year progressively responsible administrative work

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred but not required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working in a legal environment preferred.

  • Experience reading and analyzing financial-related documentation preferred.

  • Must pass a criminal background check.
