SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Special Education Administrator, the Speech Language Pathologist provides direct and consultative service to special needs students to improve communication as it relates to school tasks; intervention is provided in the students' least restrictive academic environment and may include integrated service in the classroom, pullout sessions, collaboration with school staff, observation, and consultation to the IEP team.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides diagnostic, remedial, and consultative services for students across domains of communication, including, but not limited to: receptive/expressive communication disorders, articulation/phonological disorders, fluency, and voice.
The candidate assists in the identification of students who are at risk because of educational, physical or mental limitations; assists in the development of the assessment process and written procedures; completes the educational related or early intervention assessment which includes student observation, record review, interviews, standardized/non-standard testing procedures in the areas of suspected disability according to specific timelines; prepares a comprehensive assessment report according to specific timelines; participates as a member of the IEP in the determination of appropriate treatment; develops long and short term goals and objectives; develops and implements a therapy intervention plan designed to enable the student to benefit from special education The candidate may provide students with services on an individual or group basis in the least restrictive environment; maintain records, materials, equipment and other treatment supplies; remains current with approaches, methodology and research in the field to foster professional growth, familiarity with evidence-based practices and educationally-related practices; and acquaints principals, teachers, other personnel, and parents with speech-language services.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education/Experience: Any combination of education/experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
1.
Equivalent to a Master's degree in the area of speech-language pathology is preferred;
OR
2.
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree is required
AND
3.
At least one-year school experience desirable.
Knowledge of: Using the assessments that may help in identifying a possible communication disorder, such as Receptive, Expressive, and Social Communication Assessment; Test of Integrated Language and Literacy Skills,Test of Language Development, Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals, Test for Auditory Comprehension of Language, Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, and other formalized assessment tools, as well as informal language and speech/articulation assessments; writing and interpreting an Individualized Education Plan; speech and language development as necessary for providing services; and files and records management, office procedures, and basic computer literacy is desirable.
Skill at: Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; working collaboratively with certified and classified personnel at various locations; developing goals and objectives for students eligible for speech and language intervention; implementing individual structured activities; maintaining accurate and complete records, files, and reports; and interacting effectively with all individuals contacted during the course of work.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid State of Nevada driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District; possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Nevada Teaching License in Speech and Language Impairments.
The ability to obtain a certificate of clinical competence through the national organization is preferred.
Physical Demands: The work is sedentary.
Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work.
However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile.
No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.
The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
