The Division of Campus Community Safety (DCCS) unifies front-line public safety units across the University for a holistic approach to campus community safety, innovation in approaches, and clarity in leadership responsibility and accountability.

Key units include UW Emergency Management, SafeCampus and the Seattle campus UW Police Department.

Division staff work daily in partnership with units across and outside the UW system to both create safer, welcoming campus environments, prepare for potential natural or human-made disasters, and respond appropriately to incidents.

**UW Police Department's Campus Facility Security Program has an outstanding opportunity for a** **Security Guard.** The purpose of the Campus Facility Security Program is to enhance the safety of students and personnel at the University of Washington by providing safety and security patrols to campus facilities and areas where assigned.

Security Guards also facilitate the overall security of the campus by conducting regular foot patrols, throughout assigned campus buildings, and providing general security services at other locations on campus.

**Duties and Responsibilities:**

Upon client request:

+ Perform duties primarily on foot; may operate University vehicle as needed.
+ Capable to provide Safety Escort service as part of the Husky NightWalk Program (University faculty, staff, students, guests) to various locations on campus during the designated times, as necessary and approved by on-duty supervisor.
+ All drivers will adhere to the Washington State Traffic Laws at all times while on duty and operating a University vehicle.

All drivers must successfully complete the UW Transportation – Safe Driver program to drive a university vehicle.
+ During security shift times, if a medical emergency develops, the guard is to request Seattle Fire Medics to their location.

The guard shall also administer first-aid to the victim if authorized through department protocols as are properly trained to do so.
+ Security Guards conducting security patrols shall avoid any confrontational situations with other persons and shall request a police officer presence to their location immediately if such a situation starts to develop.
+ Security Guards shall advise UWPD dispatch (via radio) whenever they observe suspected criminal activity and/or suspicious circumstances.

Security Guards are not to make contact, or engage in use of force tactics unless an extreme situation (i.e., protect self or others from bodily harm) occurs.
+ Security Guards shall perform the following secondary responsibilities when assigned:
+ Roving patrols of buildings, parking lots/garages and bike racks for criminal and/or suspicious activity
+ Building admits
+ Building checks and sweeps
+ Battery Jumps
+ Special security details as assigned
+ Other specified functions determined by the on-duty supervisor

UWPD is very proud to be one of only eight (8) police agencies in Washington State and THE only University police department internationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.

(“CALEA”), the law enforcement accreditation program requires agencies to comply with over 460 standards in six (6) basic areas: policy and procedures; administration; operations and support services; traffic operations; and, auxiliary services.

**Minimum Qualifications:**

+ Physical capacity to perform duties;
+ Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license;
+ No previous felony convictions.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

**Desired Qualifications** :

+ Security experience
+ Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills to include being clearly understandable via radio communication transmissions, especially during emergency circumstances, as well as the ability to maintain records clearly and legibly
+ Excellent customer services skills to include the ability to interface professionally with a diverse community
+ Good analytical and observation skills
+ Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making
+ Ability to operate under stressful situations (to include contacting uncooperative individuals who are in or approaching unauthorized areas), while maintaining composure in dealing with executives, clients, staff, authorities and the public, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in pressure situations
+ Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as in a teamwork atmosphere
+ Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
+ Basic computer skills
+ Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently
+ Ability to adapt to changes in the external environment to include being exposed to inclement weather and work in environments or under conditions that require the use of protective gear and devices and/or awareness of personal safety and safety of others
+ First Aid and CPR certified (or ability to obtain certifications upon hire) and maintain certifications
+ Flexible and available to work night shifts as assigned to include weekends;
+ Flexible and available to work overtime with little/no advance notice
+ Must be comfortable working in and patrolling campus buildings in a solo capacity, including a high-rise building

**Conditions of Employment:**

+ Ability and willingness to work outside in all types of weather conditions
+ No felony convictions
+ Driving history for the past three years shall not exhibit a pattern of unsafe driving habits, nor have convictions for Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, or Driving under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs.
+ Ability to work at night.
