About the Role
The New York Times seeks a Senior Engineering Manager in the Subscriber Experiences Mission to support the team responsible for the award-winning New York Times News apps: where millions of readers go to understand the events shaping the world.
The News apps are the core of the New York Times mobile experience.
The Senior Engineering Manager in this role will support an engineering team directly building features in the News app as well as collaborating with various other engineering teams within the organization who also contribute to the News app.
We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager who can lead a collaborative and inclusive team of engineers with the goal of delivering a performant, stable and engaging app experience.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Sr. Director, Engineering.
You can typically expect to come into the office two days per week.
About the Team:
Responsible for building and maintaining the New York Times iOS News app, in concert with contributing teams throughout the Times
An iOS team of about 10+ engineers responsible for iOS app
Builds app infrastructure and core features that highlight our award-winning journalism and offer gateways into our bundle of NYT products
Launches prototypes quickly to run experiments, scaling systems over time to balance consistency and velocity
Ensures overall application architecture suitably fits the business problem and quality standards, for now and for the future
Responsibilities:
Manage a group of mobile developers responsible for building, releasing and maintaining the iOS News app and collaborating with dependent engineering teams
Contribute and support the team in architecture decisions, technical roadmap and timeline estimations
Collaborate with the Mobile Platforms team to help the team implement best practices around core app architecture, development workflow and coding standards
Collaborate with partners in Product, Design and Data to prioritize and deliver features that will impact our subscriber growth goals
Manage career development for engineers at various stages of their career growth.
Contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive culture within the News team and the greater NYT engineering organization
Define and drive observability and monitoring for the iOS News app
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence () and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications:
3+ years of experience managing mobile engineering teams
4+ years of experience building complex and highly performant iOS apps
Demonstrate understanding of iOS best practices and how to advocate for iOS engineers
Experience working in complex product organizations, supporting stakeholders with diverse and sometimes conflicting technical and product requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with large legacy codebases
Experience driving a culture of performance monitoring and observability
Experience working on or leading a team responsible for being the steward of a codebase with contributors from across multiple engineering teams

This is a hybrid remote/in-office role.
The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$176,000 — $205,000 USD
