Scope of Job
Coordinate the access of interpretation services for the institution and perform advanced interpreting work utilizing comprehensive or specialized skills with knowledge of interpreter ethics.

Performs comprehensive interpreting (voice to sign or sign to voice) for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in academic or employment settings.

Description of Duties
• Demonstrates proficiency in ASL -English interpretation profession, captioning, and Communication Access Real-time Translation services including how to effectively coordinate and execute communication access services for both small and major events.
• Facilitates access through providing interpreting services or by scheduling part-time interpreters for university events, such as commencement, press conferences, and administrative meetings.
• Performs advanced or highly advanced interpreting work utilizing comprehensive or specialized skill with knowledge of interpreter ethics.
• Plans and arranges for adequate staffing to meet accommodation needs of students registered with the department.
• Monitors and reports aspects of data tracking and budgeting related to Deaf/ HOH services.
• Prepares and submits projected and final cost reports related to services provided by approved vendors.
• Creates and maintains schedules of temporary part-time interpreters each semester to fill interpreting needs for academic courses and related activities, university-wide.
• Assesses interpreter skill levels and assigns interpreters to appropriate assignments.
• Supervises temporary part-time interpreters, encouraging their conformity to Student Accessibility Services mission facilitating access and supporting students’ self-advocacy and independence.
• Communicates with appropriate faculty, staff and students to obtain preparation materials for interpreting appointments and share prep materials with interpreters in a timely manner.
• Maintains thorough written communication of student cases within the SAS records management system and maintains confidentiality of student information.
• Facilitates delivery of high-level customer service across multiple service points at all times.
• Collaborates with SAS team regarding accommodation services, case management, and program development.

Reviews documentation and recommends appropriate accommodations on an individual basis, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
• Serves as a mentor to other interpreters, including conducting or coordinating professional growth workshops.
• Recruits, selects, and hires qualified sign language interpreters.
• Recruits D(d)eaf students through transition fairs from local high schools and community colleges.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education
Bachelor’s degree in the area of rehabilitation, Interpreting for the Deaf, American Sign Language, Education, Special Educations, or a related field from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications
Texas Commission for the Deaf ( TCD ) Certification Level III , IV, or VorTexas Board of Evaluation of Interpreters ( BEI ) Advanced or Master LevelorNational Interpreter Certification ( NIC ).

Required Experience
Four (4) years of experience as a sign language interpreter at a post-secondary level.

Equipment
Use of standard office equipment.

Video Phone.

Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties.

Office/Classroom Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.

Working conditions may be determined by the situation requiring interpreting and may vary from the usual classroom or office environment.

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

Other
Be knowledgeable and competent regarding the process involved with CART and other live captioning services and be able to assist A/V technologist and remote set-up for academic environments.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Tact, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality required in all matters.

Knowledge and understanding of Deaf Culture and American Sign Language.

Time management skills.
