Mesa Associates, Inc.

is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team based in Knoxville, TN in delivering a wide range of projects for our Generation, Industrial, and Government clients.

Experience with design, engineering, procurement, and construction processes in multi-discipline projects is required.


The ideal candidate will have expertise across various mechanical systems and possess an aptitude for leading and supporting multiple design projects simultaneously, from concept through implementation.

They understand the steps, effort, and additional resources required to successfully execute their work.

They can work independently with limited supervision to complete projects ranging from small with short delivery to large and complex.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external clients is required.

The candidate must be well organized, skilled in critical thinking, able to quickly recognize issues, and ready to provide solutions.


Preferred qualifications of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, NFPA).

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

    Additional software skills including Bluebeam, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Vault, Plant3D, Inventor, ReCap, SolidWorks, FARO Scene, and other 3D rendering programs preferred.

  • The development and review of engineering calculations, design criteria and performing/Checking calculations on various systems and software packages

  • Experience with Detailed Stress Analysis – In depth analysis of piping systems, custom piping components, or fabrication assemblies utilizing AutoPIPE, Caesar II, Paulin PRG, Nastran, Inventor, and/or SolidWorks

  • Experience with Hydraulic Analysis, including pump and piping system analysis, utilizing manual methods and PipeFLO or Fathom software.

    This should include single phase, two phase and gravity flow conditions

  • Tank and Vessel Design – ASME BPVC and API Standards

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.

    Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Applies knowledge and experience to complex projects, finding non-standard design solutions.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Educational/Experience/Licensure:

  • BSME from an ABET accredited college/university

  • Minimum of ten (10+) years of experience primarily in piping and plant design

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License Required

  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards including but not limited to ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, NFPA, ANSI and API.
  • Responsibilities:

  • Preparation and completion of discipline engineering designs and supporting documents such as design criteria, calculations, drawings, and specifications.

  • Assist in the definition of project objectives, preparation of design estimates, and definition of project requirements and routine design approaches.

  • Responsible for scoping, estimating, organizing, executing, and coordinating engineering projects, which may have unique or complex technical or project execution requirements.

  • Performs technical and coordination checking review of deliverables and other project documents and ensures deliverables comply with company procedures and applicable design requirements.

  • Direct overall project design and supervise development of project design and engineering documents associated with assigned project.

  • Apply basic knowledge of system design principles and practices to develop a complete and accurate design package.

  • Possess in depth working knowledge of mechanical systems and innerworkings – Boilers, Tanks/Vessels, compressors/blowers, HRSG, Turbines, Major and Minor Piping Systems, pumps, etc.

  • Perform walkdowns and collects detailed field information related to site configuration, existing equipment data, and scoping efforts.

  • Perform technical and coordination checking/review of deliverables and other project documents.

  • Prepare calculations using engineering formulas and skills or application of specific software as required.
