About the job
Segment is a best-in-class customer data platform (CDP) (https://segment.com/resources/cdp/) designed with engineers, marketers, and product managers in mind.
We’re excited to work at the cutting edge of data and artificial intelligence, such as with our AI-Assisted Suggest Mappings product (https://segment.com/blog/ai-assisted-magical-mappings/) .
And, we move a lot of data - over 12 trillion API calls a year.
This position will be part of the Twilio Engage Audiences (https://segment.com/product/twilio-engage/audiences/) team which builds, maintains, and continually improves the user interfaces and APIs that power Segment’s audience-building capabilities.
Our team enables customers to create rich, real-time and warehouse-sourced audiences that drive personalized engagement across channels and tools.
As a customer-obsessed company, we aim to delight users with intuitive workflows, fast performance, and reliable in-app experiences.
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help evolve the next generation of our audience management platform.
This role involves scaling a complex distributed backend architecture that powers audience creation, segmentation, and activation at scale.
You’ll work on building and evolving core services that handle large-scale data processing, orchestration, and integrations with downstream systems - ensuring low latency, high reliability, and extensibility as the product surface continues to expand.
You will collaborate closely with product management, architecture, and other engineering teams to identify performance bottlenecks, design APIs and data models, and drive system-level improvements that enhance both developer velocity and customer experience.
You’ll be expected to evaluate and communicate trade-offs between feature velocity, system stability, and technical debt, and help drive architectural decisions that ensure long-term sustainability and performance.
Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll:
+ Design and build robust, scalable backend systems and APIs that power audience creation, segmentation, and activation across Segment’s data platform.
+ Collaborate cross-functionally with design, product, and other engineers to define solutions that balance usability, performance, and long-term architecture.
+ Communicate technical decisions clearly - articulating trade-offs, customer impact, and team alignment.
+ Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
+ Troubleshoot and improve system reliability, debugging issues and refining operational tooling and processes.
+ Support strategic initiatives that impact the broader Twilio Engage platform and engineering organization.
Qualifications
