Job description

What You Will DoJoin a fast paced and performance-focused team supporting nuclear operations in defense of our nation! The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division Essential Balance of Plant Group (PFE-EBP) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking multiple Nuclear Facility Engineers to be part of a brand-new Shift Technical Engineering Team, a mission-critical team that will support 24/7 operations at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility.

This position will work rotating 12-hour shifts aligned with the TA-55 Operations Center.Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)As a Shift Technical Engineer (STE), you will be responsible for ensuring safe and efficient day-to-day operations of the Plutonium Facility.

You will provide technical input to the Operations Center and will also interface with Cognitive System Engineers, Programmatic Groups, Maintenance Groups, and others to help ensure accomplishment of the LANL mission.

You will provide proactive support to ensure Technical Safety Requirements, including Limiting Conditions of Operation and Documented Safety Analyses, are met.

You will assist in implementation of project plans for the design, installation, commissioning, or operation of nuclear facility systemsNuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)Incumbent will act as the first point of contact for technical and operating challenges that arise during ongoing construction activities at the plutonium facility.

In addition to the description above, engineers in this position will have broad cross-discipline expertise (mechanical, electrical, structural, chemical), knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and procedures, guides, appropriate standards and administrative practices, and providing mentorship and leadership to peers & junior level engineers.

  • Knowledge of analysis and calculation techniques to support engineered solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with a broad group of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods, engineering principles and procedures, guides, appropriate standards, administrative practices, as well as project and process engineering practices.
  • Understanding of basic troubleshooting steps.
  • Ability to manage the configuration, operability, and performance of engineered safety systems.
  • Experience completing assignments under limited supervision.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team to meet goals and find effective solutions.
  • Ability to work in an industrial/production environment.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance (which often requires U.S. citizenship) and HRP certification.
  • Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:In addition to the requirements outlined above, the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 will also need the following:
  • Demonstrated cross-discipline experience in an operating facility environment (e.g. demonstrated experience in the design and operation of pumps and motors).

  • Demonstrated experience developing technical documents for operating facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience performing engineering calculations and analyses to support operating facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing and coordinating with a broad group of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting experience with typical operating facility equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing mentoring and training skills for junior staff.
  • Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

  • Prior experience as an Senior Reactor Operator (SRO), Shift Technical Engineer (STE), Shift Technical Advisor (STA), operations technician, non-licensed operator, etc.

  • Familiarity with LANL Conduct of Operations, Engineering Standards, and Configuration Management.
  • Familiarity with nuclear facility Technical Safety Requirements, Limiting Conditions of Operation, and Documented Safety Analyses (Safety Analysis Reports).

  • Experience with shift work.
  • Understanding of facility instrumentation and control systems.
  • Active DOE Q Clearance
  • Human Reliability Program certification, current or previously certified.

    Work Schedule: This position will be subject to 24/7 coverage, which will involve working a shift/weekend schedule.

    Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager.

    Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager based on needs of the facilities.

    Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending.

    Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.

    Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
