Job description

General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications.

These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

We have an opening for a Software Systems Engineer & Architect for Nuclear Products in Rancho Bernardo, CA working primarily with our Radiation Monitoring Systems, TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotopes and General Atomics) and Software teams.

This position reports to the leadership of the Science and Technology Products, Systems Engineering Directorate.

The candidate will have demonstrated experience in development, software, and a good understanding of systems engineering fundamentals as well as experience with nuclear industry products.

The candidate will participate heavily in developing long-range technical strategy for associated products as well as serve as a lead in bringing those solutions to market.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**

+ Engineering Development and Sustainment: Develops innovative but practical solutions to advanced technical problems in Radiation Monitoring Systems and other nuclear systems.

Supports legacy products and sustainment, including development of solutions to overcome obsolescence challenges.
+ Long-range Technical Strategy: Assist in planning for future applications and products based on new developments in computer technology.

Supports development of long-term strategy related to RMS and TRIGA product-lines to satisfy customer & market needs in alignment with international standards.
+ System Design & Architecture: Develop and implement software solutions that integrate with complex systems, ensuring compatibility and performance.

Establish architectures broaching software and hardware and end-user nuclear plant systems.
+ Software Systems Engineering, Requirements & Planning: Gather, analyze, and document software and system requirements in collaboration with stakeholders.

Lead the development of user requirements, specifications (software specifications, etc.), and development plans (software development plan) to guide planning and software development within the broader organizational scope.

Formulate detailed plans for the implementation of software solutions.

In addition to program design this includes determining language, platform, and resource requirements.
+ Software Development: Supports and participates in the design, code, test, and debug of software applications using programming languages such as [e.g., Python, C++, Java].

Software development includes end-user, system level, and data management applications.

Code maintenance including debugging and updating to keep pace in an evolving yet highly regulated environment.
+ Prototyping: Participate in the build and testing prototypes to validate design concepts and system functionality.
+ Integration & Testing: Perform or participate in system integration and end-to-end testing to validate functionality and reliability.

Develop test plans, procedures, and approaches for software and systems verification and validation.

Generates plans and procedures for software qualification testing and factory acceptance testing.
+ Cybersecurity: Ensure software development and maintenance comply with cybersecurity requirements, including adherence to industry standards, regulatory guidelines, and secure coding practices to protect sensitive data and systems.
+ International Standards: Develop and maintain software and product solutions in compliance with international standards, such as ISO, IEEE, and other relevant frameworks, to ensure interoperability and quality.
+ Debugging and Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and resolve software-related issues within the broader system context.

Identifying and resolving issues in both hardware and software to ensure system reliability.
+ Documentation & Review: Create and maintain technical documentation, including system specifications, test plans, and user manuals.

Participates in technical project/program reviews including preliminary and critical/detailed design reviews to ensure they meet defined product requirements.
+ Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment between software and hardware components.

Communicate with the software development departments, with users, and with management as well as with the wider community
+ Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize software performance and system efficiency.
+ Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
+ May serve as a direct representative of the company in interactions with customers.
+ Mentors less-experienced staff within the directorate and in other organizations
+ Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

**Job Qualifications:**

+ Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; fifteen or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, thirteen or more years of experience with a master’s degree, or ten or more years with a PhD.

May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
+ Must have demonstrated ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones as a lead.

Have a thorough understanding of software engineering principles, coding languages, and theory with technical experience demonstrating the application of those concepts.

Have an understanding and practical experience with systems engineering or software systems engineering.

General knowledge of related technical specialties such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering.
+ Electrical engineering, Electrical & Computer engineering, Mechanical engineering, Software/Firmware engineering, or Systems engineering backgrounds are preferred.

Proficiency in programming languages such as [e.g., Python, C++, Java].
+ Strong understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and systems engineering principles.
+ Experience with tools like version control systems (e.g., Git), modeling software, or simulation tools.
+ Experience with embedded systems that utilize real-time operating systems (e.g. SafeRTOS, VxWorks).
+ Knowledge of operating systems, networking, and database management.
+ Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
+ Must have excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
+ Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
+ Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team and across teams; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and leading a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single-component projects.
+ Familiarity with the formal Engineering Change Management processes.

Experience with Windchill & Atlassian suite is a plus.
+ The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.
