  • Pay Rate: $18.00 – $23.00 per hour




Job Summary:

The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) plays a critical role in the Specimen Processing Department, supporting laboratory operations by preparing, labeling, and routing specimens for testing.

The SPT I ensures all specimens are accurately logged, processed, and delivered according to established procedures, maintaining high standards of quality, accuracy, and timeliness in a fast-paced production environment.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including accessioning, presort, imaging, centrifugation, and aliquoting.


  • Ensure proper specimen identification, documentation, and routing for testing.


  • Maintain productivity and accuracy while meeting departmental turnaround time standards.


  • Handle and process biohazard materials safely, adhering to all safety and compliance policies.


  • Pick up and deliver processed specimens to designated laboratory areas.


  • Enter patient and test data accurately into laboratory systems at a rate of 6,000+ alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.


  • Practice good organization and attention to detail when processing a high volume of specimens.


  • Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to resolve issues.


  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace while following quality control and assurance procedures.


  • Demonstrate flexibility and a positive attitude in response to changing work priorities and demands.




Required Education:



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.



Required Experience:



  • Previous laboratory or healthcare experience preferred but not required.


  • Background in data entry or production environments preferred.


  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory test procedures a plus.




Required Skills:



  • Accurate data entry and specimen labeling skills.


  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.


  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.



Preferred Skills:



  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS).


  • Understanding of specimen handling and storage procedures.


  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
