• Open Role: SQL Server (Azure)/Snowflake DBA


• Duration: 6 months contract to FTE conversion


• Location: REMOTE: Preferably EST (not including South Carolina), but CST would work- must be in line with the list of approved States to work in list.

• Current Team Size/Breakdown: 3 DBAs, 1 DevOps, 7 engineers, a few other team members like Client, QAs and delivery manager

  • Azure SQL Server supports their customer-facing custom .NET apps and requires on-call support with some weekend/evening maintenance.
    
     
    
    
    
    • No on prem servers,  they have one lab VM (IaaS) that they'll use occasionally, but otherwise entirely Azure SQL Database (PaaS) 
    
    
    
    
  
  
  • There is limited use of Azure Data Factory and no SSIS.
  
  
  • Snowflake  (Snowflake Data Cloud) is their primary platform for enterprise analytics and supports some internal operational processes.
  
  
  • Using Fivetran for platform integration and dbt with Airflow for custom pipelines.
  
  
  
  


• Required Skills: SQL Server on Azure (including high availability, linked servers and elastic pools) | Snowflake | how to set up SSO with Snowflake from Azure | SQL | Grafana and SQL Diagnostic Manager | Postgres | Mongo | FiveTran | dbt | Airflow | MarkLogic | knowing how to set up AWS S3 (storage integrations)

• Day to Day:
  
  
  
  • This person would work alongside Rick Moore.
    
    Duties would include: Administration, production support, deployment automation, data engineering support, data migrations, backups, indexing and project work, making it suitable for someone from a smaller shop.
    
    managing a production support queue, supporting data engineers with data access and execution, comparing data between systems & reporting on it and working on projects like data migrations and operational process support for business functions like exam grading.
  
  
  • In Snowflake, there's about 20 in production.
    
    In SQL Server on Azure, there are also about 20 in production.
    
    CFA put most in Azure SQL and consolidated down to a couple of elastic pools
    
    
    
    • The Data engineering work is pulling the data out of SQL Server on Azure, bringing it into Snowflake, some transformation within Snowflake.
      
      Serving as support for that data engineering team.
    
    
    
    
  
  
  • 8am EST Daily Stand Up
  
  
  • There's a production support queue, interaction with the data engineers.
    
    Handling incidents from other teams that need DBA support.
    
    And they'll be handling those.
    
    (e.g. SQL scripts or execution of SQL scripts, research or performance-related things.)

JOB SUMMARY

The Database Administrator supports data stores and integrations for cloud-based data systems.

This role monitors and tunes data to ensure performance and availability and the measurement and remediation of data quality issues.

The Database Administrator retrieves and prepares data to support global business functions.

This role assembles pipelines and other transport mechanisms necessary to support the flow of data between systems including the automated deployment of the pipelines.





ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Support, monitor and maintain database systems and integrations in a multi cloud environment


• Manage reliable backup processes and high availability configurations


• Closely collaborate with stakeholders throughout the organization to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.


• Responsible for separating and securing data across multiple environments


• Document the data environment using the data catalog and other tools to be available for company use


• Prep and deliver accurate data outputs on request to support operational and compliance functions


• Provide and maintain an automated data pipeline architecture that is efficient and fit for purpose


• Closely collaborate with data team members to automate manual processes, optimize data delivery and monitor performance and availability


• Build and support the infrastructure required for extraction, load and transformation from corporate data sources with both accuracy and efficiency


• Develop and implement analytical tools to provide insight into operational efficiency, cost management and key data quality metrics

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in IT related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience


• Minimum 5 years of experience in a database administrator role


• Significant experience in data systems in a multinational environment preferred, as well as all forms of MS Azure SQL including high availability, linked servers and elastic pools


• Knowledge and competency in Snowflake, Postgres, Mongo, FiveTran, dbt, Airflow and MarkLogic


• Able to use Grafana and SQL Diagnostic Manager for monitoring purposes


• Familiar with Python for data quality purposes


• Perform issue triage and problem solving in a persistent, self-assured manner


• Fluency in English required, knowledge of additional languages would be useful


• Global cultural orientation and working experience

• Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and presentation
