Position Summary:

As a Sr. Data Visualization Engineer, you will play a critical role in enabling the company to be data-driven through the creation of visually appealing and effective data visualizations (e.g., static reports, slice-and-dice dashboards, interactive data apps) that tell compelling stories about the current and projected health of ongoing initiatives and the overall organization.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for data, a strong technical background, expertise in data visualization tools and techniques, a keen eye for design, and a desire to create visualizations that communicate complex information in an elegant manner to a variety of audiences.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their data requirements and develop engaging data visualizations that provide meaningful insight.

  2. Work with data scientists and engineers to integrate data visualizations into existing data pipelines and applications.

  3. Collaborate with UX designers and product managers to ensure a seamless user experience for data consumers.

  4. Develop, maintain, and enhance reports, dashboards, and data apps using Power BI, Python Streamlit, and other data visualization tools to track key performance metrics.

  5. Write efficient and optimized code (using SQL and dbt) to extract and merge data from various sources and prepare it for analysis.

  6. Survey the state of the relevant statistics in use and the availability of relevant data to reliably build a performance metric that will inform the decision-making process for important business initiatives.

  7. Use aesthetically pleasing data visualization techniques to effectively present complex findings in a clear and concise manner, highlighting key insights and trends.

  8. Implement exception-based functionality to alert stakeholders and refer them to the appropriate data visualization when pre-defined rule-based or statistical-based criteria are met.

  9. Develop and implement processes to ensure data accuracy and consistency across all visualizations.

  10. Help champion design and data visualization and its value within the organization.

  11. Keep up-to-date with emerging trends and tools in data visualization and recommend improvements to the existing processes.

  12. Other functions may be assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical field.

  • Master’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Experience:

  • 3 or more years of experience in data visualization, business intelligence, data analysis, data engineering, data science, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, and/or software engineering.

  • 2 or more years experience in writing SQL and Python.

  • 2 or more years experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny, Streamlit).

  • Preferred: Experience in P&C insurance or broader financial services industry.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience working with various stakeholders from different backgrounds.

  • Expert at analyzing data, systems, and processes to identify gaps and inconsistencies.

  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively.

  • Ability to think conceptually, analytically, and creatively; comfortable with ambiguity.

  • Experience managing and communicating plans to peers and with internal partners.

  • Expert in extracting and analyzing complex data sets.

  • Expert in SQL programming (dbt is a plus).

  • Proficient in Python and Excel.

  • Expert with Power BI, Tableau, or other data visualization tool.

  • Experience with Streamlit or R Shiny; experience with GitHub or GitLab.

  • Experience with cloud-based data and analytics environment (e.g., AWS).

  • Excellent data storytelling skills; able to explain complex data and findings in a clear and concise manner.

  • Experience with A/B testing and experimental design is a plus.

  • Familiarity with data modeling concepts and data warehousing principles is a plus.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
