Job Description
The Staff Scientist at the Notre Dame Power and Propulsion Laboratory (ND P&P) serves as a technical subject matter expert (SME) supporting research in advanced power and propulsion systems.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of air breathing propulsion systems and test methodologies.

The Staff Scientist will play a critical role in designing, executing, analyzing and interpreting results in power and propulsion system tests in ground test facilities.
This position requires both deep technical expertise and strong collaboration skills to advance ND P&P’s mission of generating impactful scientific knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Develop and review test plans, procedures, and data reduction techniques for power and propulsion system testing.
- Support the integration of test articles into ground test facilities.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations summarizing test results and conclusions.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of test processes and methodologies.
- Provide expert recommendations, analytics, and scientific solutions to address complex technical challenges.
- Stay current with relevant scientific literature, experimental methods, and emerging technologies.
- Evaluate, integrate, and optimize new tools and technologies to enhance research capabilities.
- Support and lead experimental campaigns involving power and propulsion systems, ensuring accuracy and reliability in data capture.
- Ensure adherence to all safety protocols, ethical standards, and institutional policies.
- Conduct real-time data monitoring, post-processing, and advanced analysis of experimental results.
- Present research outcomes at sponsor reviews, conferences, and internal team meetings.
- Support project planning, proposal development, and strategic initiatives.
- Provide mentorship to undergraduate, graduate and test engineers.
- Contribute to fostering a culture of safety, technical excellence, and continuous improvement in the lab.
Qualifications
- Master degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with mimum of three years of hands-on experience in a research or complex test environment.
- Expertise in experimental methods in fluid dynamics, combustion, or mechanical systems.
- Proven ability to independently lead technical efforts while collaborating in multidisciplinary environments.
- Strong technical analysis and problem-solving capabilities.
- Clear and professional technical writing and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- US citizen
Preferred qualifications
- Ph.D in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience with fuel controls
- Experience with combustion testing and combustion test cells
- Experience with optical diagnostic techniques
- Experience with high mach airbreathing propulsion systems
