Substation Engineer Job Opening In San Jose – Now Hiring EC Source

Overview

As one of the nation's leading electric transmission line construction companies, MasTec Power Delivery companies engineer and construct efficient and reliable electrical transmission, distribution, and substation & switchyard systems.

Our extensive workforce includes both union and nonunion teams, which, combined with our specialized equipment fleet, allows us to effectively meet our clients' needs for power delivery, emergency restoration, and ongoing maintenance.

From the electric plant to the end users, MasTec's experienced managers and crews consistently deliver transmission, distribution, and substation & switchyard services with an unfailing commitment to safety, integrity, and sustainable practices.

This is a remote position but must have PE License for the state of California.

The Substation Engineer leads the engineering and design of high voltage electrical substation projects, guiding a multidisciplinary team that includes drafters, designers, and engineers.

This role involves managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring they meet quality, schedule, and budget objectives.

As the primary point of contact, you will liaise with clients and vendors throughout the project lifecycle.


Responsibilities

  • Project Oversight: Direct and manage projects to achieve high standards of quality, adherence to schedules, and budget goals.

    Ensure timely completion by overseeing and coordinating all project activities.
  • Design Execution: Develop and update design documents, including one-line diagrams, electrical plans, and specifications.

    Use engineering software for tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, load flow, and short circuit analysis.
  • Coordination and Communication: Collaborate with customers, project teams, and management to ensure smooth project execution.

    Prepare and manage project schedules and budgets, addressing any deviations promptly.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure all engineering work complies with relevant standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI) and utilize the document management system effectively.
  • Problem Solving: Identify potential project issues and provide solutions.

    Travel as required for project needs and perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Travel: Undertake short-term travel as required by project assignments.

  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution, with a preference for a focus on power systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in high voltage (230kV and above) electrical substation engineering and design.
  • Experience with protection and controls or electrical studies 
  • Professional Engineer license for state of California
  • Skills:

  • Technical Expertise: Advanced understanding of high voltage electrical substation components, AC/DC fundamentals, and three-phase power systems.

    Proficiency in engineering software for design and analysis tasks.
  • Design Skills: Ability to produce and interpret design documents and drawings necessary for project execution.
  • Leadership and Communication: Proven ability to supervise a technical team and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Software Proficiency: Competent in word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications.
  • GIS: Familiarity with GIS is a plus.
