The Washington Post is seeking a driven, accomplished and legally savvy journalist to join our Supreme Court team in delivering insightful explanatory and accountability reporting, as well as urgent breaking news coverage, about the nation's highest court at a crucial moment in its history.



The ideal candidate will be a fast and talented writer with an impressive record of dissecting complex legal decisions for a broad audience and the ability to deliver scoops about the inner workings of the high court and that political and economic forces behind the cases it considers.

How You'll Support the Mission
  • Scrutinize and illuminate the often-opaque work of the justices, on and off the bench, while also at times writing about significant cases and trends in the federal judiciary generally.

  • Cover daily news from the court, including arguments, rulings, emergency orders, nominations and other developments, using both traditional and more innovative story formats to engage the widest possible readership.

  • Work closely with your beat partner and other colleagues-this position is one of two covering the Supreme Court at The Post.

    Both reporters frequently work with journalists on teams from across the newsroom whose coverage areas intersect with the court.

The Skills and Experience You Bring
  • A quick metabolism and competitive drive.

  • The ability to spot trends early and bring deep reporting, smart context and clear thinking to fast-developing stories.

  • Creativity in your approach to storytelling, whether via photos, video, graphics, data or design, to find fresh ways to cover the court and engage with readers.

  • Past experience covering the Supreme Court is useful but not required.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

The salary range for this position is: $122,500.00 - $204,100.00.

The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
