**POSITION OVERVIEW:**

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a System Safety Engineer for the System Safety Engineering Division (SSED) in the Accelerator Directorate.

SSED is responsible for protection of personnel from prompt radiation in the operation of accelerator systems (Personnel Protection Systems and Beam Containment Systems) and associated support equipment.

Working in a dynamic environment in support of particle accelerator and scientific experimental structures, the Engineer works with a team of Engineers and Technicians to design, support and maintain credited safety systems used to protect personnel from hazards associated with prompt ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and oxygen deficiency.

The work includes participation in the full engineering lifecycle, from developing requirements, to design engineering, to deployment, and maintenance.

The Engineer will direct the efforts of Engineering Associates and Technicians within the Department, collaborate with Engineers and Scientists within the Accelerator Directorate, and interact with other SLAC departments, DOE labs, and the international accelerator community.

**Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.**

**Your specific responsibilities include:**

+ Responsible for design engineering, implementation, system programming, and troubleshootingmaintenance of industrial controls, focused on personnel safety.
+ Translate performance and operational requirements into system specifications.
+ Lead new project developments by preparing schedules, cost estimates and directing installation work.
+ Develop and direct test plans and certification procedures that demonstrate that systems satisfy requirements.
+ Coordinate teamwork with other accelerator and instrument groups.
+ Maintain configuration control of systems in accordance with SLAC and the System Safety Department¿s policies.
+ Support occasional operational-interruption issues on-call outside of the standard workday.

**To be successful in this position you will bring:**

+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant engineering or science discipline and minimum 2 years of experience in the follow areas:
+ Designing and deploying PLC-based control systems, including programming ladder logic applications.
+ Project management
+ and the ability to develop and manage time-phased budgets and schedules.
+ Technical writing and preparation of formal reports and user manuals.
+ Familiarity with international safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508 - ISA/ANSI 84.01) for industrial controls and other engineering design standardsbest practices (e.g., NEC, NFPA-79, etc).
+ Familiarity with schematic CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD preferred)
+ Hands-on field experience implementing, programming, and troubleshooting industrial controls and associated equipment.
+ Highly organized, good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both oral and written.

**Preferred Qualifications:**

+ Several years of professional experience in the field of electronics, controls or safety systems.
+ Experience delivering turn-key factory automation projects, from initial requirements to final commissioning.
+ Prior role leading engineering and other technical teams at the project level.
+ Experience with Siemens Step 7 or TIA Portal PLC platforms, or Rockwell-Automation Allen-Bradley Control Logix platform
+ Basic understanding of analog and digital electronics and principles
+ Experience in other industrial controls engineering andor applications (e.g., machine tools, process controls, automated logistics, etc.).
+ Experience in other regulated industries (e.g., pharmaceutical, food & beverage, oilgas, etc.)
+ Experience with distributed control and fieldbus architectures.
+ Familiarity with scheduling software tools such as Microsoft Project.

_The expected pay range for this position is $117,623 to $177,168 per annum.
