This position is compensated at the Level B rate on the MIIS student wage scale: $ - $ per hour.

Description

We are seeking two motivated individuals to serve as the first TAMC Student Fellows, assisting with Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) projects and initiatives that benefit Monterey County and align with the Middlebury Institute’s mission of fostering understanding, peace, and positive change for a more just world.

The TAMC Student Fellows will work closely with the TAMC Faculty Fellow on a variety of tasks, including qualitative research, communications and public outreach in English and Spanish, community engagement, strategy development, and administrative support.

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local, Monterey-based community-engaged work.

The TAMC Fellowship is a partnership between the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS), CoLab, and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in which students, staff, and faculty collaborate on projects addressing language inclusion, community engagement, sustainability, and livability.

Our approach is grounded in the CoLab initiative, which is collaborative, intentional, social justice-oriented, relationship-focused, and community-driven.

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in project activities facilitated by the TAMC Faculty Fellow.
  • Develop community-driven engagement strategies, including outreach campaigns, promotional materials, and qualitative research including surveys and interviews.
  • Collect and analyze data to support TAMC initiatives.
  • Engage with community members and TAMC staff to enhance project impact.
  • Requirements

    Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Dispositions:

  • Experience developing project materials and public-facing communications.
  • Familiarity with community service.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with culturally and linguistically diverse individuals.
  • Strong attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Spanish (ACTFL proficiency scale).

  • Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures, and mandates.
  • Physical Requirements/Environment: 

  • The Middlebury Institute of International Studies maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act.

  • This position requires occasional moderate physical activity, including the ability to sit for extended periods, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.

  • TAMC Student Fellows will travel to different locations in Monterey County, and transportation costs will be reimbursed.

  • Applications will be reviewed by MIIS faculty/staff and TAMC representatives.

    Student Employment Eligibility:

    Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

    Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return.

    If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

    Some may be restricted due to financial aid status.

    International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government.

    (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

    Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.

    Hour Limitations:

    All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods).

    The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session.

    Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess.

    During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week.

    International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
