Job description

Position Purpose

Provides instructional assistance to students under the direct supervision of a certified professional; assists students and teachers in the use of computers and educational technology for students to maximize mastery of essential understandings.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

Instructional Support 

  • Assists teachers and students in use of computers, printers, and instructional software.

  • Works cooperatively with teachers to identify student placement in instructional software.

  • Inputs data and maintains files on student progress and use of instructional programs.

  • Maintains computer lab in a neat and orderly manner including bulletin boards and displays.

  • Technical Support 

  • Performs computer backups on a regular basis.

  • Installs a variety of computer programs following complex written instructions.

  • Identifies problems, troubleshoots and resolves routine problems, and arranges for maintenance and repair of computer equipment when needed.

  • Student Management 

  • Manages student behavior in the computer lab.

  • Helps supervise students during arrival and dismissal from school.

  • Other 

  • Assists with office and workroom clerical duties as needed.

  • Maintains confidentiality.

  • Participates in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as needed.

  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

  • Knowledge of instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics.

  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate social, emotional, cognitive, and communication skills for children.

  • Knowledge of District policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Knowledge of classroom techniques and professional etiquette.

  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.

  • Skill in communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

  • Skill in troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues to support campus instructional staff with the integration of technology.

  • Ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

  • Ability to work with students with physical, emotional, educational, and/or intellectual disabilities.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.

  • Ability to establish supportive and compassionate relationships with students with special needs.

  • Ability to monitor and correct student mistakes.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.

  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.

  • Ability to operate computer and use software to create spreadsheets, and do word processing, as well as operate Promethean Board, and applicable software applications.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

  • Travel Requirements 

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.


  • Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards 

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment including Promethean Board.

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse and reaching; frequent walking, including walking with a sense of urgency.

  • Lifting: Frequent lifting and carrying less than 50 pounds.

  • Exerting: Frequent exerting to move objects in excess of 50 pounds using handcarts and dollies; occasional exerting to move objects in excess of pounds using handcarts and dollies.

  • Environment: Works in a standard office setting and school building environment; works inside 50% and outside 50%, exposed to weather including extreme heat and extreme cold; regular exposure to noise; frequently required to listen, hear, and speak; requires occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours; frequent driving.

  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.

  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions; works irregular and/or prolonged hours; works with students with physical, emotional, educational, and/or intellectual disabilities; frequent driving.

  • Minimum Required Qualifications 

  • Education:

  • Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required.

  • Certification: 

  • Obtain valid Texas educational aide certificate.

  • Experience:  

  • Some experience working with children.

  • Language:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred in some settings.
