Description of Work Unit
The Department of Biomedical Sciences is one of four departments in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science’s ( CVMBS ).

Faculty and staff are nationally, and world-renowned in veterinary teaching and scientific research and teaching including animal cancer, oncology, infectious diseases, radiology, environmental health, equine programs, biomedical and clinical sciences, and veterinary diagnostics.

This group provides education for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine ( DVM ) Program which includes hands-on learning during the first two years of the curriculum.

Position Summary
Several Teaching Aide positions are available in the Professional Veterinary Medical program at Colorado State University which will support the program’s Foundations of Veterinary Medicine courses.

The individuals will be required to assist in the instruction and evaluation of DVM students in the performance of physical exams that include general health, ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, and pain assessments of small animals.

They must evaluate DVM students in a clinical setting.

They are expected to practice, and help students practice, safe low-stress handling techniques for all canine and feline patients.

Other model-based curriculum may include injections, venipuncture, intubation, and bandaging.

They will also implement the guidelines set in the course syllabus.

All positions are temporary and are not benefit eligible.

Positions are for one semester with the potential of continuing the following semester.

Hours worked are approximately 2-6 hours per week depending on the employee’s schedule as well as the need for clinical educators for the courses for that semester.

The course runs approximately 8-9 weeks per semester and there is a 2-3 hour orientation at the beginning of each semester as well as a one hour introduction class period that aides are required to attend.

Hours preparing outside of the class environment will be paid.

Hourly wage for these positions is $25.00-$34.00/hour depending on experience and no benefits.

Position Minimum Qualifications
An Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology (or its equivalent) with five years of veterinary clinical experience OR the substitution of at least ten years of veterinary technician on-the-job training in a certified clinic is required.

The successful applicants must have at least one semester of experience teaching as a clinical educator in veterinary medicine and demonstrate skill in physical exam techniques regarding small animals.

Preferred Qualifications
Veterinary technicians with at least five years of experience working in high quality veterinary practices (such as AAHA certified practices) that have demonstrated ability as good communicators and clinical instructors will be given preference.

Facilitation/Instruction of student labs: one class each semester, for about 2 hours per week.

The same material is covered every week, with a new group of students.

Teaching Aides will use their veterinary technician skills, along with additional skills learned in training to teach the following courses: VM610 Foundations of Veterinary Medicine I, VM611 Foundations of Veterinary Medicine II, VM710 Foundations of Veterinary Medicine III , VM711 Foundations of Veterinary Medicine IV

Preparation for facilitation/instruction: set up of equipment, takes 5-30 minutes depending on the lab.

2-hour orientation with supervisor each semester for training.
