The Department of Music at Rowan University is seeking to hire a tenure-track faculty member to lead the university’s orchestral program, with an appointment to begin September 1, 2026.



The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an active, highly visible, practice of creative activity that is based in conducting, teach at the undergraduate level, and contribute to the various service endeavors in the Department, College, and University.

Opportunities for collaborations exist within the Department, College, as well as with George Family Center for Arts and Healing.

We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Professor level, but outstanding candidates may be considered at the Associate or Full Professor levels.





The tenure-track faculty member to lead the university’s orchestral program will demonstrate conducting abilities at the highest artistic standard; a successful track record as an orchestra director (preferably at the collegiate level); a comprehensive knowledge of standard and contemporary orchestral repertoire; proven rehearsal techniques; and excellent pedagogical skills.

In addition, this position will provide a vision for the future of Rowan University’s orchestral program, serve as a leader in recruiting outstanding students, and maintain active and collaborative relationships with public schools in the region.

A master’s degree in music is required and professional experience is expected; a doctorate and/or at least three years of teaching or equivalent experience is preferred.



The successful candidate should possess administrative skills, show promise for significant scholarly/creative achievement, and have an ongoing commitment to advancing the profession, both as a teacher and guest conductor outside of Rowan University.

In addition to conducting the University Orchestra, teaching duties will include Instrumental Conducting and courses that match the candidate's qualifications, background, and interests.





The Department of Music is a vibrant community which has 400 students and 22 full-time faculty members.

Degrees offered include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music (composition, jazz studies, music therapy, music education, performance) and Bachelor of Science (Music Industry).

The campus is located in a suburban, residential setting in southern New Jersey and is near the vibrant musical scenes in Philadelphia (20 miles) and New York City (100 miles).

SALARY


In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is :
+ Assistant Professor: AFT: Range 22-25
+ Associate Professor: AFT: Range 26-29
+ Full Professor: AFT: Range 30-33





with placement within the range determined by candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors.
