Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a two-time Aspen Award-winning institution (top 15% of Community Colleges) with academic programs in over 100 disciplines.

The individual in this position assists in providing services for all three campus-located testing centers and supports high school and national testing as assigned, under the general supervision of the Testing Center Manager.

Ensures test integrity, security, and confidentiality of testing services.

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.

The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Interacts effectively with the high volume of students, faculty and staff, and performs a variety of tasks at the same time.
  • Administers placement tests, inputs scores into Colleague as needed, and provides score report results to students.

    Directs student to placement preparation resources.
  • Administers certification tests through a variety of vendors such as Pearson Vue and insures individual company policies are adhered to regarding exams and exam candidate instructions.

    Completes required training and certifications required by exam companies.
  • Administers correspondence tests on behalf of students taking courses through other colleges and/or universities.

    Works with students and outside institutions to secure receipt of exam materials, proctoring, and following return instructions.
  • Administers credit by examination for CSM departments and for CLEP and DSST.

    Completes required training and certifications required by exam companies.
  • Ensures all Testing Center calendars are constantly updated and appointments listed are accurate.
  • Schedules and administers typing certification tests and performs the testing, scoring, and processing.
  • Keeps all instructor test files confidential and secure.

    Carefully returns exam packets to appropriate parties in accordance with established procedure.
  • Administers instructors’ tests – each test has its own set of specific instructions, timing, materials that may be used, appropriate SCANTRON for to use, etc.
  • Performs online testing.

    Follows guidelines and procedures effectively.
  • Answers testing center phones and responds to testing center emails – information requested covers myriad of questions and replies must be courteous and accurate.
  • Monitors testing center with professionalism.

    Guarantees and protects against student violations of CSM’s Student Code of Conduct.
  • Assists in maintaining test security for all tests.
  • Faxes tests to other campuses upon instructor’s request or campus request when test has failed to arrive on time.
  • Produces a regular report of administered exams and Testing Center activity, and distributes this information as requested.
  • Knows procedures for providing special accommodations, such as: extended timing of tests, reader, enlarged tests, etc.

  • Refers to ADA coordinator when necessary or asks ADA coordinator questions regarding testing.
  • Maintains confidentiality of special accommodations files.
  • Maintains awareness of the Student Services Department hours and activities in order to provide general information to students.
  • Knows how to inform students as to the times and locations of tutors.
  • Answers phones and refers questions or takes messages accurately for supervisors and other staff members.
  • Provides training and support to faculty, instructors, and staff.
  • Directs received non-testing related questions to appropriate personnel or departments.

  • Additional Duties: 

    Performs other related work as required.

    Minimum Education and Training

  • High school graduate, AA degree preferred.

  • Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
     

  • Experience preferred in educational setting/environment.

  • Excellent written and oral skills.

  • Effective communicator, accurate, knowledgeable, pleasant, and accommodating.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel skill strongly preferred.

    Experience with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

  • Physical Requirements:

    The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.

    Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: 
     
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Visual ability: sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier, computer, etc.; and to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
  • Hearing ability: sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.
  • Speaking ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over a telephone.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
