Job Description Summary / TWC Summary: The Executive Director of the Library Learning Center reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for the overall library administration and operations to facilitate student success, support faculty teaching and research, provide information to improve the functioning of the university, and advance all university goals.

Texas Southern University is seeking an experienced and visionary leader.

The successful candidate for this position will be deeply knowledgeable about emerging technologies and will use that understanding as a foundation for leading the Library Learning Center toward a new vision of serving the current and future needs of the campus community.

Essential Duties Summary

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Possess academic leadership in library sciences and services, with skills to catalyze an atmosphere of excellence, scholarly achievement, and research.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current and emerging technologies in library services, information technology, and information literacy.
  • Ability to leverage new technologies to develop a vision and new strategies to support changing student and faculty needs.
  • Experience in meeting the diverse needs of stakeholders.
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of program and service trends that support academic success.
  • Candidates must be willing and able to support and advance the university’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide effective leadership to library staff to collectively achieve and assess the library’s strategic initiatives.
  • Oversees the operation of the library, including overall supervision of the Library Learning Center.
  • Creates a vision for future library operations based on best practices and university priorities.
  • Ensures that the libraries stay current with changes in technology, communication, instruction, outreach, and information storage and delivery.
  • Oversees financial operations, develops budget requests, and expenditures of the library budget.
  • Effectively plan and manage the Library Learning Center to meet evolving student and faculty needs.
  • Provide continuous improvement of library facilities and spaces.
  • Support intellectual inquiry by aligning library services with advances in research, instructional delivery, curriculum development, and academic study.
  • Provide leadership that invites collaboration, encourages teamwork, promotes diverse perspectives, and values transparency.
  • Effectively managing professional and support staff including hiring, motivating, training, developing, and evaluating the job performance of employees.
  • Represents and markets the library around the university; serves on committees as required.
  • Guide the continuing evolution of the libraries’ physical and digital collections to support the scholarly pursuits of students and faculty.
  • Assists in promoting overall student success at Texas Southern University.
  • Foster a productive, energetic, and service-oriented workplace environment.

Qualifications

% FTE: 1.0

Hiring Range: $98,509.22 - $128,061.99

Education: Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited American Library Association institution.

Additional advanced degree preferred.

Required Licensing/Certification: N/A

  • Develop strong relationships with academic Deans, the Provost, the President, and other University administrators.
  • Develop strong relationships with grantors and other external funders.
  • Acts as the ultimate subject matter expert in several professional disciplines and is the “go-to” expert on principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Requires the ability to create methods and approaches to handle unique situations.

Work Experience

Minimum of seven (7) years of related job experience, including five (5) years of experience in academic library administration.

Working/Environmental Conditions

Limited standing and/or walking.

Handling light weight objects.

Using or carrying equipment.

Stoop, bend, or lift.
