Job Title: Deputy US Arts Editor

Department: Editorial

Location: New York

Reports to: Arts Editor

Terms: Full-time, permanent, News Media Guild role

Typical shift pattern: Monday to Friday

Annual salary range: $105-115k

Purpose of the role

The deputy US arts editor will help commission and write the Guardian's US-focused arts and culture coverage.

The arts team aims to expertly cover news while producing reactive and longer term features, essays and arranging interviews pegged to the latest films, books, TV shows, albums, plays and exhibitions.

We're looking for a rounded editor and writer who's passionate about culture and the ways it intersects with core Guardian issues, crafting articles that will appeal to a wider news-focused audience.

You should be an experienced journalist who is aware of and excited by a wide variety of entertainment, from the latest Netflix hit series to a politically charged documentary to a provocative tell-all memoir to a much-talked-about new exhibition.

You should be comfortable working independently and taking charge, with significant experience in digital journalism and news/feature editing.

  • Work closely with the US arts editor, US news desks and the UK office
  • Develop ideas for pieces to write or commission and edit
  • Monitor news sources (wire services, websites, other newspapers, broadcast media)
  • Help to manage and maximise a freelance budget
  • Maintain an awareness of the latest cultural happenings and how they might appeal to a Guardian audience
  • Deputize for the US arts editor in news meetings and other duties as required

  • Experience covering news in a digital newsroom

  • Demonstrable news and feature writing/editing experience
