The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor and manager to help lead its coverage of elections and polling.
The role sits on the Election Analytics desk, a multidisciplinary team of journalists, statisticians, pollsters and developers.
Election Analytics covers data-driven reporting on elections, including The New York Times/Siena College Poll, the election-night forecast model The Needle, and the polling trackers.
You will help expand the desk’s coverage of voting, election results and polling beyond The Needle and Times/Siena polls.
Working with the Director of Election Analytics, you will shape and drive plans for data-driven stories before, during and after election night.
You should be adept at shaping stories at a high level and refining copy for a broad audience.
You should be comfortable collaborating with reporters on data work and questioning assumptions.
You should also have experience developing distinctive new areas of coverage as a new team with evolving interests.
Qualifications include sharp news judgment and the ability to stay calm under tight deadlines.
You should be able to lead brainstorming for fresh ideas beyond the usual narrative.
You should be an empathetic manager who enjoys helping people grow over the course of an election season, whether it’s reacting to the daily news cycle or preparing for the next election night.
This is a hybrid position that requires regular in-office attendance per departmental guidance.
New York is strongly preferred, but Washington, D.C.-based candidates would be considered.
Some nights, weekends and holidays are required during election season.
This is a new role on a relatively new team, with opportunities to shape the position based on your skills and background.
