About the Role

The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor and manager to help lead its coverage of elections and polling.

The role sits on the Election Analytics desk, a multidisciplinary team of journalists, statisticians, pollsters and developers.

Election Analytics covers data-driven reporting on elections, including The New York Times/Siena College Poll, the election-night forecast model The Needle, and the polling trackers.

You will help expand the desk’s coverage of voting, election results and polling beyond The Needle and Times/Siena polls.

Working with the Director of Election Analytics, you will shape and drive plans for data-driven stories before, during and after election night.

You should be adept at shaping stories at a high level and refining copy for a broad audience.

You should be comfortable collaborating with reporters on data work and questioning assumptions.

You should also have experience developing distinctive new areas of coverage as a new team with evolving interests.

Qualifications include sharp news judgment and the ability to stay calm under tight deadlines.

You should be able to lead brainstorming for fresh ideas beyond the usual narrative.

You should be an empathetic manager who enjoys helping people grow over the course of an election season, whether it’s reacting to the daily news cycle or preparing for the next election night.

This is a hybrid position that requires regular in-office attendance per departmental guidance.

New York is strongly preferred, but Washington, D.C.-based candidates would be considered.

Some nights, weekends and holidays are required during election season.

This is a new role on a relatively new team, with opportunities to shape the position based on your skills and background.

Core responsibilities will include:

Responsibilities

• Serving as the assigning editor for an interdisciplinary group of journalists, and acting as a go-to mentor to help writers and analysts grow


• With the director, developing and overseeing Election Analytics coverage plans from pre-election curtain-raisers to post-election stories


• Coordinating and editing coverage based on The Times/Siena Poll, including drafting incisive and newsworthy questionnaires with the polling team


• Serving as a liaison with other desks, building strong relationships and staying in frequent conversation with desks we collaborate with


• Leading our polling trackers, overseeing the staff that populates the database, maintaining up-to-date context and collaborating with Graphics on new features


• You will report to the Director of Election Analytics

Basic Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant journalism experience


• Experience editing stories to a high standard of readability, including identifying the right big-picture idea and turning it into copy readable by a broad audience


• Experience working in a data-heavy area of journalism (elections, economy, health care or demographics)


• Strong news judgment under pressure


• Experience overseeing multiple direct reports


• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and time management to meet deadlines


• Demonstrated support for journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience telling data-driven stories through visuals (static or interactive)


• Experience mentoring journalists from nontraditional backgrounds


• Experience blending journalistic, technical and project-management skills


• Experience developing and executing a vision for a new coverage area
