The New York Times is expanding its video journalism, showcasing journalism on-camera, sharing urgent news updates, producing on-the-ground reporting, Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.
We are looking for an experienced manager and video journalist to lead a versatile team of video journalists creating groundbreaking, short-form digital journalism.
You will oversee work that ranges from breaking news and enterprise to Reporter Videos, investigations and interactives.
You should have experience managing editorial and technical crews in dynamic, fast-moving and challenging news environments, and a proven ability to drive stories and anticipate where coverage is warranted.
You are versatile and comfortable with the evolving needs of digital video and will collaborate with The Times’ Washington, D.C. bureau to cover the current administration, while managing field producers who deploy for urgent breaking news and short-form enterprise.
You have strong news judgment and can work autonomously to identify critical stories, vet reporting, and structure impactful video across platforms.
You should have experience making sound editorial decisions and collaborating with other desks and beat reporters.
Domestic politics, U.S. and global news knowledge is essential.
You are a strong leader who motivates teams, inspires innovation, and collaborates with Times’ DC leadership to drive video coverage.
This is an in-office role based in Washington, D.C. or New York City with regular in-office attendance four days per week and possible remote work per departmental guidance.
Responsibilities: Drive innovative and exclusive stories and news coverage in a range of video formats.
Oversee a team of video journalists deployed during major news moments and for enterprise stories.
Plan and manage complex, high-risk deployments and coverage of planned news events.
Collaborate with The Times’ Washington D.C. bureau to identify stories that should be produced in video or include video reporting.
Assign, drive and provide feedback on stories.
Draw ideas from a range of video sources, including wire services, UGC, eyewitness video, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage.
Lead teams that produce live journalism, Reporter Videos and original visual stories; foster experimentation with new video concepts and strategies.
Support and uphold the value of journalistic independence and the Times’ mission to seek the truth and inform the world.
Report to video leadership in D.C.
Basic Qualifications: 8+ years of experience in digital or broadcast news.
4+ years of experience managing people, guiding video journalists or newsroom teams.
Track record managing reporters and video journalists in the field during deployments.
Strong command of a variety of video sources, including wire services, UGC, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage.
Understanding of mainstream and emerging social channels.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience overseeing geolocation and UGC verification work.
Experience developing and editing visual material for social platforms.
Expert knowledge of current events with advanced experience covering politics and breaking news in the US and internationally.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including giving clear and effective feedback.
Familiar with digital storytelling formats.
Flexibility to work extended hours and some weekends.
Ability to make quick decisions under deadline pressure and adapt to a daily, unpredictable news environment.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $145,000 - $170,000 USD.
