Job description

The New York Times is a leader in visual journalism with reporting that includes news coverage, investigations, and culture and lifestyle reporting.

The Reporter Video team identifies compelling stories and brings our journalism to our site and other platforms through video that features our journalists’ expertise.

This role involves producing, editing and publishing short-form vertical videos daily, versatile across news, features, enterprise and investigative projects, and collaborating with colleagues across the newsroom.

You should have expertise in video storytelling, including editing and writing narration and social copy, and a strong sense of the digital landscape.

A strong portfolio should demonstrate modern mobile video storytelling, the ability to learn quickly, and the capacity to work on small or large teams.

Cinematography skills are a plus.

The ideal candidate excels on deadlines and can juggle multiple projects.

This is an in-office position based in New York City or Washington, D.C., with regular attendance in the office four days a week.

There may be some flexibility to work remotely per departmental guidance.

Please note we have two positions with the following schedules and may have one role based in DC:

Tuesday - Saturday

Sunday - Thursday

Responsibilities:

  • Write, produce, edit and publish short-form vertical videos every day.
  • Help identify breaking news and enterprise across our news report and create video that features our journalists, whether working with reporters on camera or using voiceover or visual storytelling techniques including graphics and animation.
  • Write scripts, wordsmith text and copy edit.
  • Experiment with various forms of short-form vertical video storytelling.
  • Collaborate with visual editors to generate video formats that bring our best journalism to new audiences.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission.
  • Report to a Senior Producer.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of video storytelling, editing and production experience at a news organization.
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work with colleagues and reporters to synthesize newsgathering or investigations into concise, engaging video.
  • Experience producing shoots and interviewing experts on camera.
  • Experience creating original videos that incorporate audio, video, still images and text.
  • Strong video editing skills with Adobe Premiere.
  • Facility in using photo, video, audio, graphics and animation in storytelling.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to change in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Design and animation skills with software such as Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $113,270.67 - $136,000 USD.
