The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company.

It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries.

It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination.

And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is looking for a temporary Senior Producer who can develop and oversee video-first news podcasts that reach mobile, social, and digital audiences.

You will oversee the editorial, production, and stylistic components of a show or shows, and lead the teams responsible for story planning, shooting, editing and publishing our work to mobile, social and digital audiences.

You are a strong manager with a background in news, a sharp eye for the week’s most important stories.

Experience live-producing a news-driven show is an asset.

This role requires a deep understanding of podcast video production and post-production, and the ability to conceive of fresh visual approaches.

You understand social video trends and take an innovative and adaptive approach to video formats and techniques.

You must see both management and collaboration as central to your work.

You’ll provide strategic guidance on how to visualize stories—working closely with producers, reporters, cinematographers and editors to support our creative vision—and will work under the direction of the Executive Producer, Podcast Video.

This is a temporary (12 months) hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance, with occasional travel to the other office.

  • Ensure all videos are accurate and meet our standards
  • Manage video journalists and editors working on video podcast production
  • Coordinate with the audience, homepage, and social teams on the promotion for each episode and social clips
  • Collaborate with audio and video team members to develop visual treatment and workflows across both mediums.
  • Collaborate on story selection and structure.
  • Oversee studio shoots and advise on visual style
  • Direct The Times’ on-camera talent as needed
  • Coordinate and assign freelancers when needed
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • This role reports to the Executive Producer, Podcast Video

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of journalism experience in digital video or a broadcast newsroom.
  • 2+ years of management experience
  • Sharp news judgement with experience working on breaking news in a newsroom
  • Broad knowledge of current events, news and culture
  • Proven experience structuring news storytelling in a digital first video format
  • Proven experience working with art directors and production crews, and existing relationships with a roster of freelance talent
  • Deep understanding of social media and video trends
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to supervise other video journalists and schedules, direct field crews, and hire and manage freelancers when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience producing video podcasts
  • Experience with studio shooting, lighting and in-field production.
  • Experience with sourcing footage
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • Able to meet and make quick decisions under deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple assignments at a time.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including giving feedback clearly and effectively
