Job Description

The Division of Global and Community Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level.

We are looking for individuals with a passion for innovative research and fresh approaches to infectious disease surveillance, as well as community-level mitigation and prevention interventions.

Minimum Requirements: Applicants must hold a completed doctoral level degree (PhD or equivalent).

Ideal candidates will have a background in fields such as Public Health, Epidemiology, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, or related disciplines.

Areas of interest for this position include:


  • Developing novel monitoring and surveillance strategies for emerging infectious disease threats.

  • Designing community preparedness strategies in collaboration with front-line responders, laboratorians, disease detectives, emergency managers, and health professionals.

  • Implementing strategies to enhance community resilience in coping with mental health, economic, and educational challenges resulting from infectious disease disruptions.

  • Establishing testing strategies that foster partnerships between communities and health systems to build trust and collaboration.

  • Developing community mobilization interventions to increase vaccine uptake, promote adoption of prevention behaviors, and disseminate health messaging without politicization.

  • Researching the use of novel means of community mobilization, such as social media and tele-health platforms, during health emergencies.

  • Demonstrating methodological expertise in Big Data analysis, data mining, mathematical modeling, and artificial intelligence.

Research is the primary focus of the position, with funding primarily sourced from extramural grants.

A start-up package is available for junior faculty to support the development of an independent research portfolio.

The Division of Global and Community Health (DGCH), part of MUSC’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, spearheads multiple intervention efficacy trials, dissemination studies, and implementation research.

Emphasizing community-based interventions in mental health and public health, both domestically and globally, the Division is primarily supported by research grants, notably from the National Institutes of Health, and consultation contracts with state and private agencies.

Situated in a modern 7,500 square feet office suite adjacent to the MUSC campus in downtown Charleston, DGCH fosters numerous collaborations within the MUSC community across departments and colleges.

Affiliation with an academic medical center facilitates collaboration with basic scientists, clinical scientists, and physicians.

MUSC boasts multiple hospitals statewide and is a leading healthcare provider in South Carolina.

Overview of the Department:

Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2020, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is among twenty-five basic and clinical science departments in the College of Medicine.

Faculty interests span diverse areas, including the clinical-psychological-neurobiological interfaces in patients with various psychiatric problems, alongside excellence in both basic science and public health community-level intervention research.

The Department operates a freestanding psychiatric hospital and offers outpatient services in various programs such as Adult Services, Youth Services, Geriatric Psychiatry, Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs, Crime Victims Center, Eating Disorders, and Weight Management Center.

With a robustly funded research portfolio, the Department ranks within the top 10 of U.S. psychiatry departments for NIMH research support.
