Summary

The Biorepository Research Program Manager will serve as the primary operational lead for the Digestive Disease Institute led by Dr. Garth Swanson.

This position oversees the daily management of biospecimen collection, processing, storage, and distribution.

A core focus is the development and testing of non-pharmacologic neuromodulation therapies to restore gut-brain axis integrity.

Primary responsibilities of the candidate are focused on providing direct support and guidance to Dr. Swanson, collaborating faculty, and staff as it relates pre and post award data management and reporting.

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing the daily operations of the biorepository, supervision and performance management of applicable personnel, oversight of development and implementation of new protocols and troubleshoots challenges, and the analyzation and communication of data.



As a research administrative leader within the Division of GI & Hepatology, the person holding this position must operate with a substantial amount of autonomy and be willing to use sound judgment while adapting to a regularly changing environment that at times can require assistance that is outside their routine responsibilities.

As the research mission grows strategically throughout the division, this individual will provide guidance and support to other divisional programs to include developing research protocol and projects, assisting with hiring decisions, equipment purchases, etc.

Accuracy, quality assurance, customer service, and effective communication are important requirements as this position engages with a wide range of individuals both internally and externally.

Success will be measured by the impact this individual has on the biorepository, as well as other research programs and projects under their purview.

This position will report directly to Dr. Swanson.

Job Description

Job Duties:

30% - Biorepository Operations Management


  • Oversee daily management of biospecimen collection, processing, storage, and distribution.


  • Manage inventory and specimen tracking systems to ensure accuracy and integrity.


  • Ensure regular calibration, maintenance, and proper functioning of all laboratory equipment, and maintain optimal laboratory environmental conditions to preserve the integrity and quality of biospecimens.


20% - Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance


  • Ensure adherence to institutional and federal guidelines (IRB, HIPAA).


  • Develop, update, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and best practices.


  • Conduct regular audits and quality control assessments to maintain biobank certification/accreditation.


10% - Personnel Management and Training


  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate biorepository staff.


  • Provide continuous training and guidance to ensure staff maintain competency in biospecimen handling and adhere to safety protocols undefined.


10%     Collaboration across Institutions and Organizations


  • Collaborate with internal researchers, clinicians, and institutional departments to ensure biospecimen services are aligned with study goals and research protocols.


  • Serve as the primary liaison between the biorepository and external collaborators, including clinical sites, vendors, and partner institutions.


  • Support multidisciplinary teams in research projects involving biospecimens.


10% - Data Management and Informatics


  • Oversee biospecimen data capture, entry, and management, using programs such as Freezerworks, to ensure accurate tracking, documentation, and reporting of inventory and specimen metadata.


  • Analyze and report on biospecimen utilization, quality metrics, and operational performance.


 

10% - Budgeting and Resource Planning


  • Develop and manage biorepository budget, including procurement of supplies, equipment, and maintenance services.


  • Forecast resource needs based on ongoing and upcoming research projects.

    Monitor cost-effectiveness and implement strategies for operational efficiency.


 

10% - Support for Research and Grant Activities


  • Provide documentation and data for grant applications, regulatory submissions, and publications.


  • Maintain records of biospecimen distribution and usage for reporting purposes.
