Job description

Overview

This is a 26 month Specified Term position at the Specialist Librarian (PLB2/4A) classification. The University of Iowa Libraries seeks to hire an organized and detail‑oriented librarian to serve in a grant‑funded 26‑month term appointment as Map Collection Project Coordinator (MPC) Librarian (Specialist Librarian classification PLB2/4A).

Supervising a half‑time graduate assistant, the librarian will lead the project team to achieve the overall goal of assessing and refining the map collection and improving its accessibility.

The librarian will work to identify materials within and outside of the existing collection that are most likely to see use by our patrons and will collaborate with Special Collections and Archives staff to ensure discoverability of the collection.

They will also work with the Government Information Librarian to ensure compliance with the Federal Depository Library Program and will evaluate materials held across Special Collections and Archives for potential enhanced description and digitization.

This work will bring the Map Collection into the present and activate it in the future by addressing the physical refinement of the collection and increasing access to its digital counterpart.

Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Curator of Rare Books and Maps to determine disposition of map collection materials.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Special Collections and Archives, Cataloging-Metadata-Digitization, and other departments to improve accessibility to map collection materials.
  • Supervise a Graduate Assistant to work on identifying, barcoding, marking, and rehousing materials, and performing other tasks as needed.
  • Plan and implement collection projects including refinement, description, and processing.

    Identify alternative locations for maps slated for deaccessioning and facilitate transportation.
  • Collaborate with other staff to maintain sustainable, effective workflows.
  • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching and to the University community through participation in relevant library and University committees.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Qualifications

  • A library science graduate degree from an ALA‑accredited program or equivalent international degree.
  • Demonstrated interest in cartographic history, methods, and scholarship, and/or related fields.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team‑based setting where consultation, flexibility, reliability, initiative, creativity, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environment in a job‑related experience, an academic setting, and/or the community.
  • Ability to move 50 pounds occasionally and handle oversized materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a map collection, archives, and/or special collections, including the physical handling of materials.
  • Experience with geospatial research.
  • Coursework or training in special collections librarianship

The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $55,000 to $65,000.

Successful candidates will be required to self‑disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification.
