Job Summary

The responsibilities for this position include the following:

  • 40% tutoring enrolled students in the craft of writing (across curriculums); supporting retention, progression, and graduation rates and building career skills
  • 20% collaboration on promotional materials, social media, and event planning/execution
  • 40% administrative duties (recording and tracking Writing Center data, creating materials for programming/marketing, scheduling, responding to student and faculty requests, etc.)

Required Qualifications

To be considered for a graduate assistantship at the University of West Georgia (UWG), students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG.

    Please note: Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for assistantship positions.
  • Hold a Bacheloru2019s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be enrolled full-time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all previous and current graduate coursework.
  • Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge and competence in MLA and/or APA style
  • Experience with bilingual or multilingual learners
  • An earned A in ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102 (or their equivalents)

Required Documents to Attach

  • Submitted resumé or curriculum vitae, along with an application letter.
  • Writing sample demonstrating high level of skill in writing in their chosen field of study.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • The position requires sitting, sometimes for long periods of time.
  • No heavy lifting is required.
  • The position involves walking from the Center across campus for events, classroom visits, etc.

Graduate Assistants in the University Writing Center not only provide individual tutorials in writing for all undergraduate classes, but also help faculty and staff promote and advertise the Centeru2019s services, collaborate with faculty and staff in creating programming and Writing Center materials, engage student writers in crucial ways through digital and face-to-face interactions, navigate diverse subject matters and communication styles, navigate diverse learning styles, support digital and oral communications, facilitate inter-departmental communication and interaction, support Center faculty in staff in engaging a wide range of academic subject matter, provide peer mentorship, support the goals of Student Services on campus, and emphasize the importance of writing skills as means of growing personally, academically, and professionally.
