Brief Position Overview
This one-semester position is intended to attract and support an emerging scholar or practitioner (or a group of scholars or practitioners) with a range of innovative scholarship or progressive practice in architecture or allied fields.

Candidates are expected to teach, conduct research, and facilitate creative activity that will contribute to or challenge thinking about architecture as the School of Architecture looks to the future.

A broad range of scholarly and professional expertise is welcomed.

General Statement
The appointment supports the MSU Land Grant vision to transform lives and communities in the people’s interest and the School of Architecture’s mission to instill personal agency, self-reflection, and environmental empathy to educate innovators who challenge and advance the design professions.


Duties and Responsibilities
The Visiting Scholar is expected to contribute to or challenge thinking about architecture through their teaching, research, and creative activity.

The Visiting Scholar is required to present the accomplishments in the form of a public lecture at the School and submit the work produced at the School to an external body for peer review and dissemination to national or international audiences.

+ Teach a 6 credit graduate design studio

+ Teach a first-year 1 credit honors seminar

+ Conduct design related original research

+ Participate in faculty meetings

+ Serve on studio reviews

+ Present school-wide lecture

+ Be an engaged and active participant with students, faculty and staff on a day-to-day basis




Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

+ Professional degree in Architecture or related field

+ Notable recognition of Scholarship/Creative Activity.

+ Teaching or leadership experience appropriate to the position.

+ Scholarship/Creative Activity may be from a discipline related to architecture.




Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

+ Demonstrated engagement with contemporary issues in architecture




The Successful Candidate Will
The primary role of the position is to introduce new, pioneering, and interdisciplinary approaches in design research and practice and integrate them into the programs at the School.

The Program

The Department
Consisting of 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, the School of Architecture offers a 5½ -year professional program leading to a Master of Architecture degree, fully accredited by NAAB .

Located in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone ecological system and the Intermountain West region, the School of Architecture, College of Arts & Architecture and Montana State University are internationally recognized for research and creative activity drawn from the social, cultural, and environmental opportunities of the region.


The College
The School of Architecture is one of four schools that make up the College of Arts & Architecture, along with the Schools of Art, Film & Photography and Music.

The Director reports to the Dean of the College and serves as a key member of the Dean’s executive leadership team – a consultative group of directors, administrators, and support staff who work closely to advance the missions of the schools, the college, and the university.
