Hospice of Michigan

Working in the Volunteer Services Department at Hospice of Michigan means you are part of a statewide team of volunteer services.

We have regular regional and statewide meetings and are a passionate, dedicated group who are enthusiastic about the work that we do and supporting one another.

Becoming a member of our team, you participate in a new employee orientation as well as training with your direct manager and a Preceptor peer.

The education you receive about hospice and this work is a tremendous learning opportunity which is designed to deepen your knowledge of both the hospice field and the volunteer management field.

While volunteerism is a core piece of a non-profit, in hospice, volunteerism is required by the federal government.

Due to this, you will have an opportunity to learn more about the regulatory world of healthcare while seeing the transformative effect volunteers can have for patients and families at the end-of-life.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree required.

    Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Two (2) to five (5) years' work experience with increasing level of responsibility required.

    Previous experience in recruiting, training, coordinating, and scheduling paid staff or volunteers preferred.

  • Work experience in healthcare and/or hospice setting preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both internal and external relationships for all essential job functions.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking.
  • Weekly travel required.

    Comfortable traveling in multiple counties including Oakland, Wayne and surrounding areas.
  • In-person work within an office setting 3 days a week is required with the option to work remotely on alternate days.

    Presence at in-person meetings, events and community speaking engagements is required regardless of the regular days spent in the office.
  • Ease and adaptability using technology such as an electronic medical records system, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, DocuSign, comfort meeting virtually using Zoom, and other programs.

    Experience working with Vsys or similar volunteer software management system a plus.
  • Is comfortable in the presence of dogs of all breeds and sizes
  • Service Excellence

  • Contacts and speaks to patients and their family members, with compassion and promptness
  • Collaborates with team of nurses, social workers, and spiritual care advisors to identify patients who would benefit from volunteer visits and participates in team meetings twice per week or more
  • Gets to know each volunteer’s personality, skills, and availability, to bring out their fullest potential; provides regular communication and support to them in the form of emails, phone calls, and in-person or virtual meetings.
  • Reviews patient charts to ensure environments are appropriate for volunteers and advocates for volunteer assignments.
  • Volunteer Engagement & Supervision

  • Interviews and screens volunteers, including pet volunteers; discovers each volunteer applicant’s skills and talents, and whether they are a good fit to further our organization’s mission, including pet volunteers; is comfortable in the presence of dogs of all breeds and sizes.
  • Trains, supervises, places, and evaluates a team of approximately 75 volunteers; is a confident public speaker, and enjoys interacting with a variety of personalities.
  • Joins each new volunteer on their first patient visit, as well as supervisory visits throughout the year.

    Meets and interacts compassionately with our patients and families in their home and senior living communities.
  • Quality & Compliance

  • Ensures that volunteer visits take place and are documented into our electronic medical record system in a way that is compliant with state, federal, and accreditor regulations.
  • Collects, reviews, and stores volunteer visit notes, and ensures that they are entered into our electronic medical record system.
  • Adapts easily to evolving policies and procedures.
  • Adjusts to changing workload and schedule based on changing organizational priorities.
