Job Description and Duties
The Air Toxicology and Risk Assessment Section (ATRAS) in the Air and Site Assessment and Climate Indicators Branch (ASACIB) provides health effects assessments of air pollutants. ATRAS develops health effects assessments for Toxic Air Contaminants, chemicals listed under the Air Toxics Hot Spots Act, and inhaled chemicals of interest or concern to other California public health protective programs; and provides risk assessment guidelines and reviews risk assessments under the Hot Spots programs. ATRAS generates risk assessment guidelines and specific assessments of risks to public health from toxic chemicals in air, for use by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and local Air Pollution Control/Air Quality Management Districts (Air Districts) in their regulatory actions under the Toxic Air Contaminants (Health and Safety Code Section 39660 et seq.) and Air Toxics Hot Spots (Health and Safety Code Section 44300 et seq.) programs. ATRAS also reviews Air Toxics Hot Spots facility health risk assessments (HRAs) for the Air Districts and reviews alternative fuel human health impacts for the California Environmental Policy Council as part of the Multimedia Fuels Group.
Under general direction of the Senior Toxicologist, Chief, ATRAS, and the day-to-day guidance of the Public Health Medical Officer (PHMO) III, director of the Children’s Environmental Health Center, the PHMO II will work as a technical expert for evaluating, understanding, and communicating the potential health impacts of exposure to wildfire smoke and other air pollution hazards as well as effective preventive measures. The PHMO II will collaborate with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on the implementation of AB 619 (Chapter 412, Statutes of 2021; Government Code Sections 8593.25, 107250), which requires CDPH, in consultation with OEHHA and other specified entities, to prepare a plan with recommendations and guidelines for counties in the event of a wildfire or other significant air quality event. The PHMO II will assist in coordinating children’s environmental health activities within the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) and collaborate with other agencies to address children’s environmental health. The PHMO II will provide outreach and education to key stakeholders including health and public health professionals.

Working Conditions
OEHHA’s offices are located in downtown Sacramento and Oakland in a high-rise office building.
The air-conditioned work environment consists mainly of open areas furnished with cubicles. Not all areas have direct natural illumination.
Time-critical assignments are part of the workload. This position requires prolonged sitting while reviewing scientific articles, reports and generating scientific documents and reports is required.
Work duties may at times necessitate attendance to off-site meetings and teleconferences outside standard office hours.
Employees should be available to travel statewide and occasionally out of State, and assignments that require travel may be made on short notice. May be required to travel to other OEHHA locations for business related needs as necessary.
